It's fun in a campy way, not nearly as good as the same year's "Rollerball," but certainly a precursor to "The Running Man" (1987) and even "The Hunger Games" (2012). But what was very easy was predicting this cartoonish free-for-all would excel at the box office (at least $5 million in receipts against a budget of $300,000~$580,000) and would become a cult classic. Expect it all as the rebels try to stop the racers and end Mr. Nobody is safe, not even the pit crews or navigators.Attacks from airplanes, landmines, dopplegangers, ambushes, a "hand" grenade. And when Frankenstein runs over a race official called Deacon (Bill Morey) for 50 points, everyone knows this race will be setting new records for kills. Like "The Purge" (2013), anything and everything goes in "Death Race." The drivers are completely above the law.
