I import my pictures from the G2 using the supplied Canon ZoomBrowser EX. I then use the MGI Photosuite to edit the imported files. The original file size when I import is usually around 1.2KB but once I edit or even just open and save the picture in the Photosuite program the file size drops to under 500KB. The only thing that I notice is that I lose the "date picture taken" information when looking in Windows explorer (using XP).
